Sanjeev Chimmalgi

Pandit Sanjeev Chimmalgi is a Hindustani classical vocalist, composer and teacher based in Navi Mumbai. A disciple of the eminent Pandit C. R. Vyas, he carries the living traditions of the Kirana, Gwalior and Agra gharanas — three pillars of Hindustani music united in a single voice.

Born in Mumbai to a family from Dharwad, Karnataka — one of India's great cradles of classical music — Sanjeev began his formal training at twelve. His journey took him from humble first lessons to the guidance of Kirana maestro Pandit Madhav Gudi, a leading disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and ultimately to years of rigorous study under Pandit C. R. Vyas. He has also trained in Carnatic music and Konnakol, deepening his understanding of India's classical traditions as a whole.

Like a river that does not stop at a border, Sanjeev has carried his music rooted in India to stages world over - in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. He can be heard on Grammy-nominated albums by Anoushka Shankar and as a playback singer in Baahubali 2 and Hindi Medium.

Beyond the concert stage, Sanjeev shares his music with a growing community on Instagram, where he can be heard regularly @smchimmalgi with ragas, riyaz and reflections to listeners far beyond the recital hall.

At the Sanjeev Chimmalgi Gurukul in Navi Mumbai, he teaches students all all age groups in the guru-shishya parampara/tradition — ensuring that the river, as it always has, finds its way forward. Sanjeev is a loving teacher and is deeply committed to his mission on preservation, promotion and integration of Indian classical music into today’s contemporary life through guru shishya parampara, community engagement, experimentation and collaboration.
